Meeting Carel Kraayenhof

carelbrThe combination of harp and bandoneon is unheard of and that makes this album an eye-opening experience of two worlds coming together. Carel Kraayenhof is the most famous bandoneon player of the Netherlands, he worked together with Astor Piazzolla, Ennio Morricone and many others. He performed at the wedding of the Dutch King and Queen.

In the development of the tango over the years, these two instrument have actually crossed each other: In the beginning the harp was a very common instrument to play tango on, later it was replaced by the guitar. The same counts for the bandoneon, but then the other way, first the flute dominated the tango scenery, it was later replaced by the bandoneon. So there was common ground to be found between the two instruments. The Histoire du Tango by Astor Piazzolla became a must for this album, being written originally for flute and guitar, now on bandoneon and harp.

Carel introduced Lavinia to many different pieces by South-American composers, such as Jorge Cardoso, Pintin Castellans and Mariano Mores. Together with Spanish music by Manuel de Falla and film music by Ennio Morricone (Legend of 1900) and Luis Bacalov (Il Postino) this album has a wide diversities in sounds and characters, all pieces being transcripted for this combination. Carel Kraayenhof has also written special pieces for this album and Lavinia recorded for the first time a composition of her own, called Hello Stranger, dedicated to her niece Viena.
