Attraction happens between people but also between pieces. When I heard the Valse d’Amélie by Tiersen I was thrilled to hear the resemblance with the music of Satie. Perhaps done unconsciously by Tiersen, but for me it was a clear fact: Tiersen is not only a composer who captures the French nostalgia and combines it with modern influences, but there is a connection to his predecessor Satie in the way he colors his melodies. Both are well known to the world of cinema and capturing an image in music. In Tiersen’s music I hear a lot of different instruments combined, even if it is just written for one instrument. The pulses in his music from the movie Amélie sound like the heartbeat of a young girl. I wanted to capture this unprejudiced feeling in the sounds of the harp, playing with the colors and attack of the strings.
